President Pahor and Foreign Minister Cerar are attending the 73rd session of the General Assembly
The President of the Republic Borut Pahor, who is heading the Slovenian delegation and the Minister of Foreign Affairs dr. Miro Cerar, are like so many other representatives, attending the General Debate of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly. This year the Assembly is chaired by Ms. Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces of Ecuador.
Today, Monday 24, before the opening of the General Debate, the UN General Assembly held a special session called Nelson Mandela Peace Summit, to mark 10th anniversary of President Mandela's birth. In his statement President Pahor mentioned that the debate and the dialogue are two of the strongest weapons to encourage peace. In his opinion the question remains however of whether of not we have the necessary political will. The United Nations were established exactly with the purpose to prevent future generations from ever experience the senseless wars again.
President also met with the President of Gana Mr. Nana Akufa-Aaddo with whom they discussed very good relations between the countries and especially the possibilities of economic cooperation. President has also attended the reception in honor of the Heads of Delegations hosted by the President of the United States.
Minister of Foreign Affairs dr. Cerar held some separate meetings, among others with the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates dr. Anwar Gagrash. They discussed the excellent relations between both countries and in particular the possibilities of strengthening of economic cooperation. This afternoon the minister participated at the informal EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting at the EU Delegation Headquarters.
